Mit collider.com hat sich Drehbuchautor Alex Garland (und Regiedebütant mit dem heiß erwarteten Ex Machina) über das von Fans gewünschte Sequel zu Dredd unterhalten, das durch eine Online-Petition und ermunternde Worte seitens Hauptdarsteller Karl Urban so sehr herbeigesehnt wird. Garland allerdings ist da weitaus skeptischer und ernennt die Fortsetzung offiziell für gestorben.
[...] I also feel a sense of responsibility because I know there are these people who do this stuff like they've got money and they spend money on a DVD to try and up the chance of a sequel getting made. Because I don't have an online profile or persona or anything like that I can't speak to these people directly, but what I want to say is that's so good of you, and thank you, but keep your money because the people who make the decisions don't get moved by that kind of thing. They're moved by other stuff, other equations, other algorithms.
Er drückt es noch etwas differenzierter aus:
[...] It means something that these people support the film in that way, but the thing people want, which is a sequel, I don't think is going to happen. I think it will happen (let me rephrase that) I don't think it's happening with me and the people who made the last one.
Dredd war einer der coolsten Actionfilme 2012 und man muss es Dredd-Darsteller Karl Urban hoch anrechnen, dass er nicht ein einziges Mal sein Gesicht gezeigt hat und damit der Comic-Vorlage absolut gerecht wurde. In dem Film hat so ziemlich alles gepasst, von Olivia Thirlby als Dredd-Sidekick und Lena Headey als Gegenspielerin. Wer Dredd (den 2012er Film, nicht die 1995er Variante mit Sylvester Stallone) noch nicht gesehen hat, sollte dies schleunigst nachholen oder aber sich gänzlich fernhalten, um nicht eine Träne für das nicht passierende Sequel zu vergeuden.
