Swansea honoured the late Austrian striker Besian Idrizaj after winning promotion to the Barclays Premier League on Monday. Albanian-born Idrizaj, who played for the Swans in the 2009/10 season, had great talent, was named Austrian young player of the year when he played for LASK Linz and signed for Liverpool in 2005. He died of a heart attack in 2010 aged 22.
After beating Reading 4-2 in the Championship play-off final, his former teammates donned t-shirts with Idrizaj’s name and picture during the presentation and lap of honour.
After Besian Idrizaj had died from a heart attack during sleep two weeks after the end of the Championship campaign 2009/10, in which Swansea had narrowly missed out on making the play-offs, the club have since retired Idrizaj’s number 40 shirt.
