I don't know about you, but when I was watching the Sailor Moon anime, I always took a closer look at the outfits shown in the series. They were full of Japanese fashion trends. Like frill-heavy combinations with ankle-length skirts and lots of ribbons (Usagi wears something like that in the Sailor Moon S Movie and Minako wears a similar outfit during the series) or shorts with knee-highs / overknees would be typical examples.
