Das White Sands National Monument [waɪt ˌsændz –] (deutsch Weißer Sand) ist ein rund 25 km südwestlich von Alamogordo (New Mexico) gelegenes Naturschutzgebiet am nördlichen Ende der Chihuahua-Wüste. Es umfasst in einem weiten Tal – dem Tularosa-Becken (Tularosa Basin) – den südlichen Teil eines 712 km² großen Gipsfeldes, auf dem sich riesige Dünen gebildet haben. [Quelle: wikipedia]
The White Sands National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Alamogordo in western Otero County and northeastern Doña Ana County in the state of New Mexico, at an elevation of 4,235 feet (1,291 m). The area is in the mountain-ringed Tularosa Basin and comprises the southern part of a 275 square miles (710 km2) field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world.[2]
Sie betreten nun Naturschutzgebiet der besonderen Art!Eine Freundin hatte mir schon vor längerer Zeit (in Ungarn) davon erzählt und irgendwie hatte das offenbar Eindruck hinterlassen- ich wollte da unbedingt hin. Beim Gatten stiess es zunächst auf nicht so wahnsinnig viel Gegenliebe, aber ich konnte das Ziel gut verkaufen in Kombination mit den Carlsbad Caverns ganz in der Nähe (dazu folgt nochein gesonderter Beitrag). Und wir sind uns im Nachhinein einig: es hat sich sowas von gelohnt!
A dear friend of mine told me long time ago already (in Hungary) to visit this place and obviously it was pretty impressive, what she told me- I wanted to go there badly. Hubby first wasn´t very interested, but I could convince him by combining Carlsbad Caverns as another attraction very close to this spot (there´s gonna be a seperate posting about that one). And after all we both agree: it was SO worth the travel!
Unendliche weisse WeitenDiese unglaublichen Weiten, diese (Un)Farbe, unvorstellbar für den menschlichen Verstand! Selbst die Natur hat sich dem weissen Sand angepasst und so gibt es statt dem klassischen Schneehasen eben z.B. weisse Eidechsen.
This wide open spaces, this color (although white isn´t a color per definition), not imaginable with human sense! Even nature adapts with the white sand and so you´ll find white lizzards instead of mountain hares for example.
weisse Eidechse- white lizzardZiemlich beeindruckend ist dann auch, wenn man mal in die Dünen rein läuft und dabei die Schuhe auszieht- man sollte davon ausgehen, dass der Sand ganz schön heiß ist, war er aber nicht. Man konnte im Vergleich zu Death Valley Desert (auch hierzu in einem separaten Eintrag) bequem auch ohne Schuhe im Sand laufen…
Pretty awesome is also the fact, that if you walk into the dunes without shoes you´ll notice that the sand isn´t as hot as expected. Compared to Death Valley Desert (coming in a seperate posting) it was easy to walk in the sand barefoot…
Taking a walk through the dunesDas Gebiet ist riesig und die Wege werden mit schwerem Schneeräumgerät frei gehalten, da ein stetiger Wind die Dünen wandern lässt, so dass sie von Westen nach Osten jährlich um die 90 Meter zurück legen.
The area is tremendous and the paths are kept clear with heavy snow ploughs as there is always wind and moving the dunes from west to east as much as 30 feet per year.
Nur nicht zu schnell!Und man glaubt es kaum, auch die Flora kommt nicht zu kurz. Es gibt eine Vielzahl an Pflanzen, die sich wacker gegen die Widrigkeiten halten.
And believe it or not, there is also a lot of flora living there. You´ll find a lot of plants against all odds.
Seifen-Palme mitten im Nix.Als Ausgangspunkt bietet sich Carlsbad an, da sich dort auch noch eine wunderbare Attraktion bietet. Zu den Carlsbad Caverns dann beim nächsten Mal mehr Infos.
