Heute vor 20 Jahren, am 21.Januar 1993, erreichte Whitney Houston mit I Will Always Love You die #1 in den deutschen Charts. Sechs Wochen hielt sich der Song aus dem Film The Bodyguard an der Spitze. Damit wurde die Nummer bereits zum dritten Mal ein Hit. Das erste und zweite Mal hatte 1974 und 1982 Dolly Parton damit eine #1 in den Country Charts (1982 auch eine #53 in den Hot 100). Parton hat den Song auch geschrieben und ist damit die einzige Musikerin, die einen dreimaligen Hit komponiert hat. Whitneys Version besetzte in den USA 14 Wochen lang Platz 1, in den UK Charts 10 Wochen lang und war insgesamt in 16 Ländern die meistverkaufte Single des Jahres. Bis heute ist es die erfolgreichste Nummer 1 eines Soundtrack-Albums.
Nach Houstons Tod Anfang 2012 kam der Song erneut in die Billboard Hot 100. In der ersten Woche stand der Song noch auf Platz 7, eine Woche später erreichte er Platz 3 der Charts. In Deutschland stieg der Song nochmal bis auf Platz 19. I Will Always Love You gehört zu den grössten Songs aller Zeiten.
