Pete Who?
Wäre Pete Townshend nur das Mastermind der Gruppe "The Who" gewesen, hätte dies eigentlich schon für ein Plätzchen in der Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame gereicht, auch wenn er dort nicht das vordringlichste Ziel der Groupies war;
die kreischten dem auch-blauäuigen Sänger, Wuschelkopf Roger Daltrey (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Daltrey) zu.

Ob diese Stimmung zu seinen Gewaltorgien an Bühnenequipment und mancher Hoteleinrichtung führte, mögen andere beurteilen. Jedenfalls gaben seine Lyrics einer ganzen Generation die Worte für ihre Gefühle:
People try to put us d-down (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Just because we g-g-get around (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-c-cold (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)

Man kann Pete Townshend auch kaum den Vorwurf machen, dass er hinsichtlich der letzten Zeile nicht alles versucht hat, seinen Vorsatz zu erfüllen.
Auf einer seiner Soloplatten findet sich unter den Danksagungen auch der Dank an Remy Martin. Mit dem ihm eigenen Zynismus dankte er dem Hersteller, dass er den Stoff so teuer verkauft hat, dass er es sich nicht leisten konnte sich damit umzubringen.
Trotzdem verbrachte Townshend immer wieder in klinischer Behandlung, um seine - vor allem Alkohol- Sucht in den Griff zu bekommen.
Was mich an Townshend so fasziniert ist seine künstlerische Breite:
Vielleicht nicht der beste Rockgitarrist aller Zeiten, hat seine Art das Instrument zu spielen viele beeinflusst. Daneben experimentiert er bereits früh mit Synthesizern und elektronischen Klängen.
Die Texte zu den meisten seiner Songs schrieb er selbst und verband sie gerne zu zusammenhängenden Geschichten.
Während Tommy noch relativ leicht in eine Film- und Musicalfassung zu bringen war, waren spätere Projekte wie The Iron Man (1989) und Psychoderelict (1993) so komplex, dass Versuche sie in Szene zu setzen wenig erfolgreich waren.
Zu meinem persönlichen Favorit, dem Soloprojekt White City: A Novel (1985), das der "Meister" hier erklärt (youtu.be/FkBRLBCzPl4), gibt es ein kaum bekanntes Filmprojekt (youtu.be/7iFtg4JFgzE). Egal, bei mir läuft ohnehin ein Film ab, jedensmal wenn ich die Songs höre:
Face The Face ist ein gutes Beispiel für Townshends Freude am Wortspiel, das ihn sehr nahe an einen anderen Künstler der bald hier ins Herrgottswinkerl kommen wird: John Lennon.
