Die eindrucksvollsten Musiker lerne ich häufig über pure Zufälle kennen, und so war es auch in diesem wunderbaren Fall. Vor einiger Zeit war ich auf einer Online-DJ-Plattform einer geschlossenen Gruppe unterwegs und wurde von einem der Anwesenden gebeten, Chandelier von Sia in meine aktuelle Playlist aufzunehmen. Ohne zu wissen, worauf ich mich da einließ, suchte ich den Song heraus. Das Video begann und ich war kurz davor, einen weiteren Tab zu öffnen, schließlich lief die Musik bei mir eher im Hintergrund. Doch das änderte sich schlagartig bei Chandelier.
Sia Furler, wie die Australierin mit vollem Namen heißt, hat ihr Musikvideo um eine junge Tänzerin aufgebaut, die sich in so anmutiger, und gleichzeitig verstörender, Manier durch die kahlen Räume bewegt, dass man nicht anders kann, als wie gebannt die bewegten Bilder zu verfolgen. Zu der Choreographie gesellen sich Sias durchdringende Stimme und elektronische Beats, die die Geschichte von einem verzweifelten Partymädchen erzählen. Das Mädchen hat die Kontrolle über das eigene Leben längst verloren, trinkt und feiert wie mechanisch. Die Bewegungen der erst 11-jährigen Maddie Ziegler ergänzen diese melancholischen Worte und machen das Gesamtwerk zu einem Unikat.
Ich war gefangen von Sias Stimme und führte mir diesen Song von nun an deutlich häufiger zu Gemüt, bis ich auf eine Coverversion stieß, die mich auf ganz andere Weise berührte. Er stammt von der US-amerikanischen A-Capella-Gruppe Twisted Measure, die zu einem College in North Carolina gehört. Ihre Version variiert in der Struktur und insbesondere in der Intensität, die sich ihren Weg durch die gesungenen Worte bahnt. Durch die Stimmgewaltigkeit der Gruppe und der Absenz jeglicher Instrumente wird das Lied zu einem verzweifelten Appell, das lyrische Ich aus ihrer Situation zu erretten. Insbesondere die Stimmfärbung der jungen Frau, die im zweiten Teil des Lieds stärker in den Vordergrund tritt, beschert mir jedes Mal wieder eine Gänsehaut und nimmt mich mit auf eine emotionale Achterbahn.
Letztlich habe ich mich aus mehreren Gründen für die Version von Twisted Measure entschieden: zunächst einmal ist sie mit Sicherheit unbekannter als das Original. Ich bin sehr bemüht, euren Ohren Neues zu bieten. Außerdem bewundere ich A-Capella-Künstler zutiefst, da sie mit ihren Stimmen all das transportieren müssen (und dürfen), was sonst Instrumente zu einem Teil mittragen. Die Harmonie dieser Gruppe ist wunderschön anzuhören und eröffnet dem Lied neue Tiefen, die Sia mit ihrem Elektro-Pop-Song nicht zu vermitteln vermochte. Macht euch selbst ein Bild davon.

There are many amazing musicians that I discover by accident, and this is exactly what happened with the following artist. A couple of weeks ago I was on an online-DJing-platform I’m using with a group of people, and one of the fellow DJs asked me to play Chandelier by Sia. Never having heard of song or artist before, I trusted the enquiry and added this song to my playlist. When the video began, I was on the verge of opening another tab – the music had only been on in the background until now. However, this changed within seconds.
Sia Furler, which is the Australian singer’s full name, built her music video around a young female dancer in a nude body and a blonde wig, who dances across various empty rooms in a graceful, yet slightly disturbing manner, and I found myself unable to look away from this. Therefore, I followed the girl, the lyrics – sung by Sia in a very strong manner –, and the electronic beats while learning about the life of a young girl who has lost control over her life and her free will a long time ago. She parties and drinks hard, is the one who always gets called to have a good time, but who is desperate and lonely deep inside. 11-year-old Maddie Ziegler, the dancer, complements said lyrics perfectly and turns this video into an artistic masterpiece.
Sia’s voice just had me. It’d had me from the first moment, and I continued to listen to this song numerous time within the following weeks. By accident (again!) I came across another version of the song, one by the US-american a capella group Twisted Measure, who are part of a college in North Carolina. Their version partly varies in part of the structure, and especially in terms of the lyrics’ intensity that shows itself through the words sung. Due to the strong, yet vulnerable voices of the group and the absence of any instruments the song turns into a desperate plea to rescue this young girl from her hopeless and monotonous life. Especially the young woman who has solo parts in the second part of the song has a voice that sends shivers down my back every time I turn the music on. She takes me on an emotional ride on a rollercoaster, and when I get off, I always need a moment to calm down.
There are a few reasons why I chose Twisted Measure’s version for my blog entry: first of all, they are not as famous as Sia, the original singer. I always try to present to you new and/or local artists that deserve to be known by more people. In addition, I very much admire the talent of a capella artists, because their voices are all they have to transport emotions, messages, appeals and everything else in a song. Instruments may facilitate this process, but they also may take away a bit of the magic. This version of Chandelier is so wonderful and harmonic, from the first to the last second. All the members of Twisted Measure provide more depth to this song than Sia could ever have included with her electronic-pop original. Please, hear for yourself and prepare to be enchanted immediately.
