I don’t know exactly how I should rate this book, because it has moved me very much from the topic and partly has also caught very well the emotions. But unfortunately, I couldn’t get along with Anderson’s writing style, which has seemed to me in English even much bumpier than the German translation of her books. I can say that, because I’ve read already read ‘Wintergirls’ by Anderson, which also deals with a very serious subject. But like there, also here the writing is too unbalanced, chopped off and also with the dialogues I had to get used to – especially here in this case where Mel not really talks, but only has internal monologues or communicates with others by nods or very short sentences.

For me these are also the main reasons, why the book has only got 2.5 points. Besides I also haven’t liked it, that then the end came too suddenly, after the read has trembled so long with Mel and was worried about her. It would have interested me, how it goes on afterwards, and don’t want only to see a small highlight at the end and then after half a page later the book just ends – this was way too quick.

Moreover, I have relatively soon figured out what the big mystery and her secret was. Unfortunately I was right with my guess and it let me feel sick, like it did to Mel.
And yeah, here partly it has also fitted like Anderson has wrote the book, but nevertheless I would have liked it to read it in a more liquid form, without the constantly disturbing of my reading fluency, because of the short, clunky sentences.

Ich weiß nicht genau, wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll, da es mich vom Thema her sehr bewegt hat und auch teilweise gut die Emotionen eingefangen hat. Aber leider kam ich überhaupt nicht zu Recht mit Andersons Schreibweise, die mir auf Englisch noch viel holpriger vorgekommen ist, als eine deutsche Übersetzung ihrer Bücher. Ich habe nämlich bereits ‘Wintermädchen’ von Anderson gelesen, welches sich ebenfalls mit einem sehr ernsten Thema beschäftigt. Aber wie dort, so auch hier, ist der Text zu unausgeglichen, abgehackt und auch die Dialoge sind sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig – besonders hier in diesem Fall, wo Mel nicht wirklich redet, sondern die ganze Zeit nur innere Monologe führt oder mit den anderen durch nicken oder ganz kurzen Sätzen kommuniziert.

Das sind für mich auch die Hauptgründe, warum das Buch nur 2,5 Punkte bekommen hat. Nebenbei hat es mir auch nicht gefallen, dass das Ende dann zu abrupt kam, nachdem man so lange mit Mel gezittert und sich um sie gesorgt hat. Mich hätte es einfach interessiert, wie es dann weiter geht und nicht nur ein kleines Highlight am Ende und dann noch eine halbe Seite, bevor das Buch zu Ende ist – das war mir viel zu rasch.

Außerdem habe ich relativ bald geahnt, was das große Mysterium und ihr Geheimnis war. Leider bin ich damit richtig gelegen und es hat mir selber die Übelkeit aufsteigen lassen.
Und ja, zum Teil hat es hier auch gepasst wie Anderson das Buch angelegt hat, trotzdem hätte ich es in einer flüssigeren Form lieber gelesen, ohne dass ständig mein Lesefluss durch die kurzen, hölzernen Sätze gestört wird.
