The capitol of Cambodia is home to about 2 million citizens and represents the economical and political centre of the country. Most of the people are still very poor und the corruption is still everywhere. This leads to the situation in which Phnom Penh is the hub for all sorts of trade. Everything that money buys can be obtained in this city, meaning EVERYTHING. The impression we got from this place is composed of street kids, markets, insane traffic, hot temperatures and of course the always present Tuk Tuk guild who sometimes makes it rather difficult to have a stress free walk on the street. But there is also the pretty Phnom Penh with its green avenues, shopping centres, monuments and of course the royal palace. We take a big walk and check out all the sights. Pretty impressing was the big market hall which was built in the art nouveau style and became recently refurbished using French money. If one dunks into the Russian market, one can see how food is handled in Southeast Asia, which would put European health authorities to high alert, but - who cares. Welcome to Phnom Penh!
