We spend three days in the capital of Tibet. We visit many monasteries, temples and palaces like Potala Palace (the winter palace of the Dalai lama), Sera and Deprung monasteries and the Jokhang temple in the center of the old town. We are accompanied by Sonam, our 25 year old Tibetan guide. This young man knows the entire history of Tibetan Buddhism and is eager to explain us every detail. On numerous walks and quite a few glasses of yak butter tea we philosophize about Buddha and the world. Soon we notice that the Chinese keep the Tibetans in an iron grip. Sonam was astonished to hear that it is possible in Switzerland to keep a political post while practicing your religion and that people can demonstrate without being arrested.Lhasa is full with heavily armed policemen and soldiers, in case sudden riots start. One is guarded and watched 24 hours a day.
In Lhasa the holy is united with the everyday life. We meet pilgrims from all over Tibet who gather devoutly in long queues to bring alms to the temples murmuring prayers. Many people walk one of the numerous koras every day. Koras are circuits around holy places which are always conducted with Buddha to the right (clockwise). Almost always there are stationary prayer wheels to whirl in case the own one isn't enough. Besides the meeting of friends and neighbours the koras provide spiritual merit which improve one's karma. The better the karma the better the prognosis for your next life and the sooner you reach enlightenment and nirvana.
