Guillermo Del Toro hat nun selbst Zweifel daran geäußert, das es einen dritten Hellboy Film geben wird, der die Trilogie komplettieren würde. In einem Interview hat er dennoch über den dritten Film gesprochen oder vielmehr darüber, was der dritte Film hätte werden sollen.
“[...]the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the beast of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
Del Toro hielt auch noch eine Erklärung parat, weshalb der dritte Film so schwer umsetzbar wäre. So meint er, dass sowohl der erste als auch der zweite Hellboy ihre jeweiligen Produktionskosten im Kino zwar wieder einspielen konnten, sie ihre wahre Kraft aber erst auf dem Heimmedienmarkt entfalten konnten. Mit einem Blick auf das Business haben die Studios nun aber nicht mehr das Sicherheitsnetz der DVD und/oder Blu-ray Verkäufe. Deshalb sähen sie das Projekt als gefährlich an.
“Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively. But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from MY side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters.”
Vielleicht fehlt Guillermo Del Toro nur ein Hollywood Blockbuster Hit, damit die Studios ihm vertrauen. Etwas das seine letzte Regiearbeit Pacific Rim leider nicht liefern konnte. Amüsanterweise ist die Fortsetzung zu Pacific Rim bereits bestätigt und für 2017 angekündigt. Allerdings findet man auch das Projekt Hellboy 3 in der IMDB, wenn auch nur als Gerücht.
