Josh Lawson ist ein in 1981 geborener Australier, der sich im Filmbusiness als Schauspieler, Drehbuchautor und nun auch als Regisseur gezeigt hat. Mit Der kleine Tod. Eine Komödie über Sex inszenierte er sein Langfilmdebüt, das auf dem diesjährigen South by Southwest Festival den Narrative Spotlight Audience Award und auf dem Thessaloniki Film Festival im vergangenen Jahr den Open Horizons Audience Award gewinnen konnte. Am 9. April dieses Jahres kommt sein Film auch in die deutschen Kinos und erzählt uns in vielen kleinen Geschichten über die unterschiedlichsten Menschen und ihren sexuellen Fantasien.
Ich hatte für filmtogo die Möglichkeit Josh Lawson mit zwei Fragen via eMail an die Tastatur zu fesseln, ebenso durften andere Blogger ihre zwei Gedanken an Lawson loswerden. filmtogo: I read that you studied one whole year improv techniques in L.A. Are you an improv-guy when it comes to directing or did you stick to the script?A little of both. I love improv and think it can be a valuable tool when used appropriately. But if it's overused then the dialogue can become sloppy. But it can be invaluable in creating unique voices for the characters as well as that second language that people have when they've known each other for a long time. I try to find a balance of the two.filmtogo: Your film is kinda structured in little vignettes. Is that something you brought from your experience in shorts and tv? Was it easier as a first time director to have these little storys and bring them together under one big topic?
I wouldn't say it was easier. A film structured the way this one is presents a whole new set of challenges that a more singular film doesn't have to face. Holding people's attention for 90 minutes is extremely difficult no matter what kind of film it is. But I chose this multi storied format because I just felt that there were too many stories to tell when dealing with this subject. One couple simply couldn't tell the whole story. So I decided to let each couple represent a different kind of relationship and deal with a different sort of moral and sexual dilemma.
