Einige haben sich vielleicht schon einmal so wie ich gefragt, warum eigentlich diverse Smartphone-Hersteller ein UKW-Radio im Gerät einbauen (das sie oft kaum bewerben) und Apple so etwas nicht vorhält. Nun, eine plausible Erklärung wäre, dass Apple auf unnützen Ballast verzichtet und – zumindest in meinem Fall – ein UKW-Radio im Smartphone entbehrlich ist.
Zumindest technisch steckt aber auch in jedem iPhone ein UKW-Radio:
You probably didn’t know it, but there’s a FM radio inside your iPhone. It’s part of the wireless chip that provides the phone with WiFi and Bluetooth (the Murata 339S0228 chip, in the case of the iPhone 6). Apple has this functionality switched off, and the National Association of Broadcasters would like the company to switch it on, arguing that there are a number of benefits over streamed radio content.
Wenn die Technik sowieso im Chip sitzt, warum wird sie dann nicht zumindest für Dritt-Apps freigegeben? Die Antwort ist, dass es allein mit dem Empfangsmodul nicht getan ist. Es fehlen eine brauchbare Antenne und ein Verstärkermodul, was beides Platz benötigt, der nun wirklich nicht unbedingt verschwendet werden muss. Die meisten anderen Smartphones lösen das Antennenproblem, indem das Headset als Antenne fungiert. Das wäre sicherlich auch im Falle des iPhones denkbar, entspricht aber wohl kaum dem Anspruch, den Apple an Technologien stellt.
Zumindest einen guten Grund gibt es aber schon, das Fehlen des Radios zu bedauern:
Users could avoid expensive data charges and save battery life if they listen to the FM chip for free. Listening to streaming drains your battery three to five times faster than listening to the exact same content on the FM chip [and] it’s a critical resource in an emergency.
Im Katastrophenfall hätte der Anwender also ein brauchbares Batterieradio, das er so wohl nicht mehr unbedingt vorhält. Und wenn wir mal darüber nachdenken, ob die Mobilfunknetze im Ausnahmezustand wohl noch funktionieren, so wird einem das UKW-Radio im Smartphone immer sympathischer.
Doch selbst wenn Apple sich irgendwann doch noch entscheidet, dem Wunsch der amerikanischen Rundfunkanstalten zu beugen (was unwahrscheinlich ist), so bleibt das Problem, dass viele Länder schon drauf und dran sind, analoge UKW-Sender abzuschalten. Ersatz ist DAB-Funk. Und natürlich … Onlinestreaming.
