Eine kurze Notiz zu einem Bild in Facebook brachte mich auf das Grübeln über dieses Getränk. In Vietnamesisch wird es als „sâm dứa“ bezeichnet. Die meisten Vietnamesen sagen „pineapple juice“, also Ananassaft. Ich habe mich schon die ganze Zeit gewundert, warum es grün ist und überhaupt nicht nach Ananas schmeckt (im Übrigen heißt Ananas auf Vietnamesisch auch dứa, aber häufig findet man auch thơm oder khóm).
Ein intensives Suchen brachte es ans Licht: es handelt sich um Pandanus, eine Pflanze, die in den Tropen weit verbreitet ist. Es gibt auch Küchlein mit Pandanus-Creme gefüllt. Es ist keine Nuss!Es ist eine Pflanze aus der Familie der Schraubengewächse, die ananasähnliche (!) Früchte hervorbringt. Deswegen wohl die Verwechslung mit der tatsächlichen Ananas. Das Getränk, das man mit oder ohne Milch (sữa) trinken kann, schmeckt unglaublich süß – nach Mandel. Liegt auch daran, dass die Vietnamesen Tonnen an Zucker reinschütten. Erfrischend ist es mit Eis allemal.

A small comment on my picture in Facebook brought me to think about this juice. In the menu it is called "pineapple juice", but I wondered why it is green and does not taste for pineapple at all. In Vietnamese it is called "sâm dứa“. Dứa is one word for pineapple, but most use "thơm" or "khóm".
After some intensive research I found the solution: the word dứa means als pandan, a fruit from the pandanus, a screwpine plant. It is widely found in the tropic areas. The plant bears fruits, which are similar to pineapples, therefore the misunderstanding. The juice, which can be drunk with or without mil (sữa), tasts very sweet and after almond. The Vietnamese really put tons of sugar in it. But with ice it is really a joy to drink it when it is hot.
