We met the young photographer Aleksandra Kubos during the exhibition „lichtgrau“ (photographs from students of the Ostkreuz School, Jonas Maron class) whose pictures we instantly liked – and thus pretty quickly decided that we would like to show them in our gallery.
Aleksandra was born 1978 in Poland, where she studied architecture. From 2006 on, she became more and more intrigued by the medium of photography. She took part in the exhibition „Views on Baryth“ at the stately library in Neukölln in 2006, as well as in many other photography projects.
Here we see photographs from her series „Nostalgia“. Those pictures, of which many were taken at Aleksandra´s hometown Berlin, contain a strong obscurity and opaqueness – shown directly in the pictures, in misty forest parts or blurred landscapes as well as in the general atmosphere of the images themselves…. in people whose face is turned away from us, but whose melancholic, indeed nostalgic, feelings we can guess nevertheless.
In the publication accompanying the images, this special character of nostalgia is described as follows:
“For me, nostalgia means memories. Like in the French meaning of this word. And this is something fertile – we hold on to a certain image, it returns and we want to pass it on. If this works, if another person clasps at least a part of this image and transforms it into something new, then it becomes fertile and creative.
It is not the sort of nostalgia an old woman sitting in the sun might feel, closing her eyes, looking back and longing for those past happy times.
For me, nostalgia is a creative fermentation device, without nostalgia nothing would come into being, there would be no art. People begin to write about what they used to long for, or what they experienced – about pictures that are engraved on their minds.
Here it begings, this is what we are made of, we make capital of what we have already gone through, what is gloomy and unknown to us, and exists somewhere inside of us. This is what becomes out of a rather unconscious nostalgia!”

Bei der Ausstellung „lichtgrau“ (Fotos des Seminars Jonas Maron/Ostkreuzschule) lernten wir Aleksandra Kubos und ihre Bilder kennen und waren uns schnell sicher, dass wir die junge Fotografin gerne in unserer Gallery vorstellen möchten.
Aleksandra wurde 1978 in Polen geboren und studierte dort Architektur. Ab 2006 widmete sie sich verstärkt der Fotografie, und nahm unter anderem an der Ausstellung „Ansichten auf Baryth) in der Staatlichen Bibliothek Neukölln (2008) teil.
Hier sehen wir Bilder aus ihrer Serie „Nostalgia“. Allen Bildern, von denen viele in Aleksandras Heimat Berlin entstanden, haftet eine große Obskurität und Undurchsichtigkeit an, die sowohl direkt in den Bildern zu finden ist, in vernebelten Waldstücken oder unscharfen Landstrichen; oder auch in der Stimmung der Bilder selber… In Menschen die das Gesicht von uns abgewandt haben – deren melancholischen, oder besser, nostalgischen Gemütszustand wir aber erahnen können.
In der zu den Bildern gehörenden Fotobuch-Publikation wird der hier besondere Charakter von Nostalgie so beschrieben:
„Für mich ist Nostalgie Erinnerung, so wie in der französischen Bedeutung dieses Wortes. Und das ist etwas Schöpferisches – wir halten ein Bild an, es kehrt zurück und wir möchten es weitergeben. Wenn uns das gelingt, wenn ein anderer zumindest ein Stück dieses Bildes erfasst und etwas für ihn daraus entsteht und er es weiter umwandelt, dann ist das schöpferisch.
Das ist nicht solch eine Nostalgie, wie wenn ich als alte Frau in der Sonne sitze, die Augen schließe, zurückblicke und mich nach den vergangenen, schönen Zeiten sehne.
Für mich ist Nostalgie ein schöpferisches Gärungsmittel, ohne sie würde nichts entstehen, keine Kunst. Die Menschen beginnen darüber zu schreiben, wonach sie sich gesehnt oder was sie erlebt haben, d.h. über Bilder, die sich eingeprägt haben. Hier beginnt es, daraus bestehen wir, wir ziehen einen Nutzen aus dem, was wir bereits hinter uns haben, was düster und uns unbekannt ist und irgendwo in uns existiert. Das entsteht aus einer eher unterbewussten Nostalgie.“ (Kristiana Robb-Narbutt)
