Becca Stadtlander is a remarkable illustrator from Kentucky/US. Her aesthetics are based on an appreciation of folk art and pastoral imagery, which inspires her work and guides her style and identity as an illustrator. Using watercolour and gouache, she makes small paintings that depict a poetic visual narrative through texture, colour, pattern, and intricacy. “Creating a feeling on paper is the challenge I start with in every piece”. Concerning her inspirations Becca calls herself a collector at heart. Some of her greatest influences come from trips to the local antique and junk shops.  She’s inspired by folk art and handmade objects, and she’s drawn to any precious thing that has some charm about it. Becca gains her inspiration also through artists like Grandma Moses, Edward Gorey, and Henry Darger. Her favourite motifs are plants and animals – outdoor scenes in general. Houses, furniture, patterns, and anything Victorian are on her list as well. She works primarily with gouache, ink, and watercolour on thick Arches Watercolour paper.  She always has a hairdryer on hand to speed up the process, because she likes to paint in layers. Her working process she describes as follows: “Whenever I have a new project, I start by collecting reference photos and making rough sketches.  Sketches are usually a requirement and come in handy when starting a final painting.  Putting the first wash of colour on the paper is one of my favourite things to do and it sets the color scheme for the whole piece.” Becca Stadtlander loves the things she paints. Her illustrations – the shape, colour and pattern – are soaked with dedication. Even a profane motif  such as a chair gains beauty and meaning. Not in a sense of an objet trouvé or a ready-made, but with the quality of poetic artistic language. Ihre Lieblingsmotive sind Pflanzen und Tiere. Ausserdem zeichnet und malt sie oft Häuser, Möbel, Ornamente und alles Viktorianische. Sie arbeitet vor allem mit Gouache, Tinte, und Wasserfarbe  auf festem Arches Watercolor Papier.  Ein Haartrockner liegt immer bereit, um den Arbeitsprozess zu beschleunigen. Ihre Vorgehensweise beschreibt sie wie folgt: “Wann immer ich ein neues Projekt habe, sammle ich passende Fotos und fertige Skizzen an.  Skizzen werden oft verlangt und sind auch sehr nützlich, wenn es an das eigentliche Bild geht. Die erste Farbschicht mit Wasserfarbe aufzutragen ist meine Lieblingstätigkeit, sie bestimmt das Farbenspektrum für das ganze Bild” Becca Stadtlander liebt die Dinge die sie malt. Ihre Illustrationen – Form, Farbe und Muster – sind getränkt in Hingabe. Sogar ein so simples Motiv wie ein Stuhl gewinnt durch ihre Hand Schönheit und Bedeutung. Nicht im Sinne eines Objet trouvé oder eines Ready-made, sondern mit der Qualität einer poetischen künstlerischen Sprache.
