We are very excited to present this collection of images from one of our favourite illustrators, Nicoletta Ceccoli, a native and current resident of the Republic of San Marino. Ceccoli studied animation at the Institute of Art in Urbino, Italy.
As a working artist Ceccoli is a well known book illustrator, her clients include Vogue, Random House, Diesel, Macy and United Airlines. Ceccoli has been the recipient of numerous awards, such as the 2001 Andersen Prize “Baia della Favore” for Italy’s illustrator of the year.
When thinking of Nicoletta Ceccoli´s work, one is instantly engulfed in a surreal world of beauty and innocence, a lost reality where young girls with long fairytale like hair can swim with octopus legs or fly away with butterfly wings. Over time, Ceccoli has developed a unique way of creating illustrations that involves surreal characters, mainly girls, who are both adorable and cruel at the same time, thus her work is both beautiful and yet equally disturbing.
Ceccoli´s illustrations blur our contemporary reality with a childlike fantasy, creating a realm with human figures fused with animal limbs all backwashed in a surreal surrounding, creating a dream world that is at times beyond our reality.
Ceccoli is one of the emerging artists of the so called “pop surrealism” and the new “art that creeps” movements. One finds an unusual amount of tenderness and sympathy in Ceccoli´s images, her protagonists, no matter if they are victims or perpetrators, always succeed in causing astonishment, love, and empathy in the viewers.

Ceccoli konnte sich bereits einen großen Namen als Buchillustratorin machen, und ihre Kundenliste umfasst unter anderem Vogue, Random House, Diesel, Macy und United Airlines. Zudem hat sie zahlreiche Ehrungen erhalten, wie z.B. im Jahr 2001 den Andersen Preis “Baia della Favore” und somit die Auszeichnung als Illustrator des Jahres in Italien.
Man verbindet Nicoletta Ceccoli und ihre Illustrationen mit einer ganz besonderen surrealen Welt voller Schönheit und Unschuld – eine verlorene Realität, in der junge Frauen mit endlos langen märchenhaften Haaren mit ihren Tintenfischtentakeln schwimmen gehen oder mit ihren Schmetterlingsflügeln davon fliegen können.
Ceccolis Bilder zeigen auch häufig surreale Charaktere, die sowohl zauberhaft als auch grausam sein können, zur gleichen Zeit, und so ist die Kunst von Ceccoli sowohl schön anzuschauen als auch verstörend. Indem sie ihren Figuren Tier-Körperteile und -Attribute verleiht, die mit deren menschlichen Körpern verschmelzen (Schmetterlings-Haare, Tintenfisch-Beine) schafft Ceccoli so völlig neue Geschöpfe, die in unserer Wirklichkeit kein Vorbild haben und so nicht zu finden sind.
Ceccoli kann durchaus dem sogenannten aktuellen “Pop Surrealism” oder der “Art that Creeps” zugeordnet werden – jedoch finden wir in Ceccolis Bildern eine überdurchschnittlich hohe Menge an Sanftheit, Einfühlungsvermögen und Sensibilität. Wir finden die Figuren ihrer Bilder immer sympathisch – egal ob sie gerade Opfer oder Täter, stolz oder gefangen sind. Immer erweckt Ceccoli auch Verständnis und Mitgefühl für sie im Betrachter.
