D Ich habe euch schon oft von der Uni erzählt und dass ich in Hamburg studiere. Aber mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich euch noch nie so richtig erzählt habe was ich eigentlich studiere.
Wenn ich Leuten auf die Frage, was ich studiere "Mensch-Computer-Interaktion" antworte, bilden sich meistens riesige Fragezeichen in deren Gesichtern ab. Zur kurzen Erläuterung habe ich mir angewöhnt den Satz "Ein Mischstudiengang aus Informatik und Psychologie" hinterher zu werfen. Dann nicken die meisten Leute und fahren mit dem Gespräch fort. Die Leute die es wirklich interessiert, geben sich damit nicht zufrieden.
Also fange ich einfach mal von ganz vorne an. Ich war also in der zwölften Klasse des Gymnasiums und würde in einem Jahr mein Abitur schreiben. Wie die meisten Schüler, habe ich mir schon Jahre vor dem Abi angefangen darüber Gedanken zu machen, was eigentlich nach der Schule ist. Zu Beginn stand für mich fest: ich möchte nicht studieren. Ich habe mich dafür schlicht und einfach zu dumm gefühlt, hatte keine Lust mehr auf das ewige lernen und das herumschlagen mit Stoff, der mich eigentlich nicht interessiert. Ich wollte lieber praktisch etwas machen, aber was? Auf diese Frage habe ich nie eine Antwort gefunden.
Meine Informatiklehrerin hat schließlich den Grundstein für meine spätere Entscheidung gelegt. Mir fiel Informatik in der Schule immer extrem leicht, ich habe das immer darauf zurückgeführt, dass es ja nur Schulinformatik war und somit nicht besonders tiefgreifend. Aber während ich ohne zu lernen immer meine 15 Punkte schrieb, scheiterten die meisten anderen kläglich am Verständnis dieses Fachs. Meine Informatiklehrerin hat mich schließlich darauf angesprochen ob ich eigentlich nach der Schule in Richtung Informatik gehen möchte. Das war das erste Mal, dass es mir wie Schuppen von den Augen gefallen ist: ich hatte also endlich etwas gefunden worin ich gut bin.
Aber in diesem Bereich fand ich nie eine Ausbildung die mir zusagte. Ich habe eine ganze Weile darüber nachgedacht eine Ausbildung zum Fachinformatiker zu machen, mich aber schließlich dagegen entschieden. Also beschloss ich irgendwann doch, mir mal das Angebot der Universitäten anzuschauen.

But the people that really want to know what I'm doing mostly aren't satisfied with that.
But lets start at the beginning: I was in the twelfth grade and would write my Abitur soon. That's the point were all of us were thinking about what's next. Like most of the students even years before my Abitur I started to thing of what I want to do after it. At the beginning I was pretty sure in one thing: I didn't wanted to study. I simply felt to stupid for the university and I don't wanted to learn more theory and stuff that doesn't really interest me like in school. So I wanted to do something practical: but what? I never found an answer for this question.
Eventually my computer science teacher lay the foundation for my final decision. In school computer science was always pretty easy for me, what I always put down to the fact, that it was just a school subject and not that profound. But while I was always easily writing the best grade other students miserably failed at the subject. In the end my teacher asked me if I wanted to do something in the direction of computer science later. So the scales finally fell from my eyes: I finally found something where I was good at.
I never found a education in that area that excited me, so after all I decided to look at the offers of universities.
D Es gibt da diese grünen dicken Bücher, die jeder Abiturient mindestens einmal in die Hand gedrückt bekommt. Darin sind alle Studiengänge nach Fachrichtungen aufgelistet. Ich habe also die Fachrichtung Informatik aufgeschlagen und alles rausgesucht, was keine reine Informatik war. Informatik selbst wäre mir nämlich zu trocken gewesen.
So kam ich letzten Endes auf die drei Studiengänge bei denen ich mich dann auch beworben habe: "Mensch-Computer-Systeme" in Würzburg, "IT für Psychologie" in Darmstadt und "Mensch-Computer-Interkation" in Hamburg.
Von allen drei Unis habe ich eine Zusage bekommen, die Uni Hamburg war allerdings besonders schnell und hat mir am Tag meiner Bewerbung eine Sofortzulassung gegeben.
Für die Uni Hamburg habe ich mich dann letzten Endes aus verschiedenen Gründen entschieden. Zum einen wegen der Sofortzulassung, es war einfach schön zu wissen wo man steht und dass es einen Platz für einen gibt. Zumal mich die anderen Zusagen erst erreicht haben als ich gerade in Kapstadt war und es so schwer gefallen wäre eine Wohnung zu suchen und so etwas. In Hamburg habe ich meinen Platz in der Welt gefunden und bin glücklich.

In the end I found three study paths in the field of Human-Computer-Interaktion that I was applying to, in Würzburg, Darmstadt and Hamburg.
I got a place at all the three university, but the university of Hamburg was the fastest. One day after my application I got a approval for college place. Ultimately I decided to go to Hamburg because of different reasons. One of them was their fast answer, it was just nice to know that there is a place in the world for you. And the other universities only sent me their approvals when I was already in Cape Town and it would have been pretty hard to search a flat in Germany out of South Africa. So I found my place in the world in Hamburg and I'm pretty happy over here.
D Nun kommen wir aber endlich dazu: Worum geht es in diesem Studiengang überhaupt?
Es handelt sich wie gesagt um einen Mischstudiengang aus Psychologie und Informatik. Beides studiere ich im Hauptfach, ich bin also nicht mehr Psychologe oder mehr Informatiker. Im Moment fühle ich mich aber mehr als Informatiker als als Psychologe.
Im Studiengang geht es vor allem um Benutzerfreundlichkeit und Interaktionsdesign. Vor allem die Design Komponente gefällt mir daran sehr gut. Ihr könnt es euch also so vorstellen, dass wir versuchen Geräte und Programme so entwickeln, dass sie sich an den Anforderungen des Nutzers orientieren. Zumindest ist es das, was ich nach einem Semester glaube, dass mein Studiengang sich darum dreht. Im ersten Semester sind Informatik und Psychologie noch relativ strikt getrennt. So lernen wir einerseits wie die Wahrnehmung des Menschen funktioniert und was da im Gehirn so passiert und andererseits wie man Software entwickelt. In den höheren Semestern soll das dann zusammengeführt werden.
Das erste Semester ist nun schon vorbei und ich bin immer noch zufrieden mit meiner Wahl. Die Klausuren liefen recht gut und morgen beginnt dann auch schon das zweite Semester.
Ich hoffe dieser Post hat etwas Licht in die große Dunkelheit um mein Studium gebracht.

Like I already said it's a mixture out of psychology and computer science. Both of them are my main subjects, I'm not more a psychologist or computer scientist. But at the moment I feel more like a computer scientist.
The study path is mostly about usability and interaction design. Especially the design component is pretty interesting for me. You can imagine it like we are trying to develop devices and software that are oriented towards the requirements and necessities of the user. At least that's what I think after one semester. In the first semester computer science and psychology are still divided. We learn something about the perception of humans and what happens in the brain and all that stuff and on the other hand we learn how to develop software. In higher semesters that will be more brought together.
Now the first semester is already over and I'm still happy with my choice. The exams were alright and tomorrow the second semester starts.
I hope this post brought light into the big darkness around my studies. Now I want to know:
