Doldrums

Doldrums is the alias of Airick Woodhead. Him and two friends were the supporting band of Grimes in Berghain a few weeks ago and they are even featured on Grimes’ Vision for the song “Colour of Moonlight (Antiochus)”.

They are hailing from Montreal’s noisy scene. The Doldrums released their first EP Empire Sound on No Pain In Pop back in november 2011. Now they are the latest signing of Souterrain Transmissions and there is a new EP out called Egypt. The title track is a poly-pop song. Chopped up samples, Airick’s androgynous disembodied voice and the primal percussions remind me of an ancient, crumbling civilization. Nevertheless the song is one of the most modern pop songs i have heard these days.

“Doldrums has been many things to me; lover, friend, inspiration, internet pioneer, all around genius, and permanent teenager. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a human being who exudes more raw energy. Airick is gonna hate me for writing this, but he once described himself as the ‘Michael Jackson of DIY music culture,’ and I couldn’t agree more.” — Grimes
