The number of Cambodians traveling abroad had seen a sharp increase.

509,200 Cambodians went abroad in the first nine months of this year. This is an increase of more than 38 %,  from only 367,300 in the same period a year ago. In the month of September this year, Cambodian outbound tourists were 77,260, up 69 percent from 45,800 in the same month last year.

Most Cambodians have visited Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia thanks to visa exemption agreements and direct flight connections. Also, some are on their leisure or business trips to China and Hong Kong.

The impoverished Southeast Asian nation has a population of 14. 3 million. By the end of 2010, the GDP per capita was 830 U.S. dollars, according to the government records. However, there is a wide gap between the urban rich and the rural poor.

Tourist visitors to the Kingdom increased 15 per cent year-on-year in the first eight months of 2011., saying 1.9 million foreigners entered Cambodia during the period.

Vietnam remained the largest source of arrivals, with 408,517 tourist visits through August – a 20.7-per cent increase on 2010. South Korea was the second largest source of visitors, with 227,545 entering the Kingdom from January to August, a 19.3 per cent year-on-year increase. China came in third with 158,492 visitors.
