Bike Tube Card Wallet Tutorial

Ich finde es wahnsinnig toll, wenn Leute aus etwas Altem ein neues schickes Teil zaubern, z.B. indem man Kleidern neues Leben einhaucht, indem man sie verziert, oder noch besser, alten kaputten Dingen einen neuen Zweck und Aussehen schenken, indem man sie upcyclet. Nun habe ich auf verschiedenen Seiten tolle Projekte gesehen, die aus alten Fahrradschläuchen tolle Sachen zaubern, z.B. Geldbörsen, Zippertaschen, Gürtel, Schlüsselanhänger usw. Da passt es doch, dass ich ein Wichtelgeschenk benötige, das sowohl Männchen als auch Weibchen erfreuen soll und so habe ich mich entschlossen eine kleine Kartenbörse anzufertigen und meinen langwierigen und fast zum Verzweifeln bringenden Arbeitsprozess mit euch zu teilen. Die Masse des Endprodukts sollten im geschlossen Zustand knapp 10x11cm sein, offen sollte er 20x11cm betragen.

I get really excited, when people make something amazing with old, torn and broken things, just by decorating an old jacket you can give it a new life, even better give something that is totally kaput a new form and function by up-cycling it.Recently I have discovered many great sites which show off projects made out of inner bike tubes, I saw wallets, zipper bags, belts, key fobs etc. Well, then it's quite fitting that the holidays are around the corner and I need a secret Santa gift, which has to delight both male and female, so I decided to make a bike tube card wallet and let you in on my occasionally tedious and often infuriating process.The measurements of the end product are: 10x11cm when closed, 20x11 when open.

Zunächst muss man sich also einen kaputten Fahrradschlauch besorgen. Ich habe super Reifen, die sollen 10 Jahre halten, also kann ich bei mir keine Schläuche finden. Daher bin ich zu dem Fahrradreparateur meines Vertrauens gegangen und habe lieb um welche gebeten. Er hatte zwei da und hat sie mir gerne mitgegeben, ansonsten wären sie im Müll gelandet. Also einfach mal in einem Fahrradladen nachfragen und die Schläuche vor dem Müll retten.

First of all you need a torn bike tube. I have super duper tyres, which have a 10 year guaranty  say what? so I haven't got any at home. So I went to my usual bike handyman and begged for some old tubes, which otherwise would have landed in the trash. So just be nice an go and ask at you local bike shop if they got some old tyre tubes for you. Nun, da man den Fahrradschlauch hat, muss man ihn der Länge nach aufschneiden, am besten an einer Schweißnaht entlang, dann bleibt alles schön gerade. Innen im Schlauch ist Talkumpuder, daher muss man den Schlauch erst richtig waschen, im Eimer mit Spüli geht am besten. Trocknen lassen und schon geht es weiter.Now that you've got your bike tubes you have to cut them lengthwise, the best way to do this is to follow the welded seam, then everything shoul stay pretty straight. On the inside is some kind of white powder, so to get rid of it, just dunk the tyre into a bucket of water with some washing liquid. Let it dry off and then you can start.

 Man braucht vier Stücke Schlauch, die 22cm lang sind, das ist für die äußere und innere Fach, vier Stücke die 12cm lang sind, das werden die Kartenfächer und Klettverschluss 7cm lang, damit die Börse nicht die ganze Zeit aufklappt.You will need four pieces of tube: 22cm long they are going to make up the outer and the inner part.four pieces of tube that are 12cm long they will be used for the card slotsand Velcro: 7cm long so the wallet doesn't flap open the whole time
Damit man einen leichten Zugriff auf die Karten hat, habe ich am oberen Rand einen Mini- Halbkreis markiert und den Schlauchabschnitt weggeschnitten. Bei allen vier 10cm langen Schlauchstücken wiederholen.So sieht das dann aus, siehe unten.Make life easier on yourself by curving the top of the rim of the card slots a little, so you have easy access to your cards.This is what it should look like: Jetzt zwei der langen Schlauchstücke so aueinanderlegen, dass sie 12cm breit sind, dazu einfach eins der Kartenfächer auf die beiden langen Seiten legen und so anlegen, dass alles aufeinander passt. Damit nichts verruscht, habe ich das ganze mit Kreppband gesichert. Wer Stylefix von Farbenmix besitzt, ist natürich zu beneiden, meins ist leider alle, aber jedem ist zu empfehlen, statt Kreppband Stylefix zu benutzen.

Now place two of the long pieces, 20cm long ones, on top of each other an space them out so they have a width of 12cm.  You can check that you have the right width by placing one of your card slots on top to see if it matches up. Secure everything with masking tape, so nothing slips, I don't recommend pinning it with neddles, you can try of course, if you want to. A better way of securing the tubes on top of each other is by using double sided tape which is made especially for sewing, unfortunately I have run out of mine, but if you do have some, well use it, you lucky bastard thing, you.

Es ist furchtbar wichtig, dass man zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Fadenspannung ändert, denn ich habe ewig lang rumprobiert, aufgetrennt, geflucht, aufgegeben, nochmals versucht, fast geheult, bis ich dann auf die Idee kam mal Fahrradschläuche vernähen zu googlen und entdeckte, dass man die Fadenspannung auf 8 stellen muss, oder jeweils so hoch wie die Maschine es zu lässt.Beide überlappende Seiten mit Klebeband fixieren und beide Enden festnähen. Ich hoffe man kan auf dem unteren Bild erkennen, was ich meine. Übrigens, ich habe mit einer 80er, einer 90er und einer 100er Nadel probiert zu nähen, es funktionieren all diese Stärken.

Now, it is very important that you change your thread tension here, do not miss this step. I learnt my mistake through lots of trials an tribulations that you cannot miss this step, I tried for ages to get it right, was swearing, gave up, tried again, it brought me nearly to tears, until I had the bright idea to google sewing with bike tubes and discovered that you have to change thethread tension to 8or even higher, if your machine lets you. Just try sewing on a discarded piece of tube to get the right tension, before you continue.Fixate both overlapping ends of the tube lengthwise and sew both sides. I hope you can see what I mean in the bottom picture. By the way, I tried different needle strengths, 80, 90 and 100, and they all work, so no worries.

Klebeband abziehen und das gleiche mit den anderen beiden langen Schlauchstücken wiederholen.

Rip off your tape and do the same with your other two long pieces.

Natürlich ist das Ganze jetzt noch recht schief, aber das Geradeschneiden wird ganz am Ende erledigt, also nicht ungeduldig werden.
Of course it is still rough around the edges and uneven, but don't panic, we will fix that at the end.So, nun kommt es zum Verzieren der Außenhaut, wenn man es lieber schlicht mag oder Reparaturflicken die Außenhaut zieren, kann man diesen Schritt natürlich aussparen. Ich verziere gerne und habe mich hier für ein relativ wildes Zickzackmuster entschieden. Am Anfang war es etwas schwierig über die Schläuche zu nähen, mir sind die Nähte gerissen oder die Nähte blieben nicht haften, also habe ich mir Backpapier geschnappt, draufgelegt und einfach alles zusammengenäht. Statt Backpapier kann man auch Seidenpapier oder Schnittmusterpapier nehmen, aber es sollte recht durchsichtig sein. Mit der Backpapiermethode hat es einwandfrei funktioniert, aber einfach austesten, wie es bei einem selber läuft, vielleicht klappt es bei euch ja besser, denn ich würde jedem gerne den nächsten Schritt ersparen.

So, now you can decorate the outer layer, if you like it plain or have some neat repair patches on your tube, then leave out this step. I like to decorate and I decided to do a simple wild zig-zag-pattern. It was pretty difficult in the beginning, the thread broke, then the seam, but then I remembered an easy trick, just place baking paper on top and zig-zag sew on it. Instead of using baking paper you can use soft tissue or pattern paper, it should be quite see-throughy. The baking paper method works quite well, but just try it out and see if you can do without, maybe you have no problems with decorating, because I truly would like to spare you the next step.Das Backpapier entfernen ist eine regelrechte Tortur, nach gefühlten 100 Stunden fummeln und ziehen (tatsächlich waren es so 5-10 Minuten), ist die Außenhaut vom Papier befreit und sieht so aus:Removing the baking paper is pure torture, after what felt like 100 of hours of fumbling and pulling (actually it was more like 5-10min), the outer layer was finaly free of the paper and looks like this:Nun nimmt man das innere lange Schlauchstück und bringt die Kartenfächer an. Man beginnt mit den darunterliegenden und höherliegenden Kartenfächern. Man legt sie auf das lange Schlauchstück, die Einbuchtungen zeigen zueinander, und sind etwa 1-2cm vom Rand entfernt. Wieder festkleben und dann nähen. Am besten man testet das ganze, indem man seine Karten auf den Schlauch legt und dann mit den Kartenfächern bedeckt, so weiß man dann genau wo was hinkommt.The next step is to attach the card slots to the inner layer. You start with the bottom layer of card slots. Place them on the inner layer about 1-2cm away from the edge with the curved edges facing each other. Tape it and sew. Before you sew, it's best to test it by placing cards on the inner tube, where you would like them to be and then putting your card slots on top, then you know exactly where everything should go.Ich habe jetzt leider einen kleinen Fehler gemacht, denn ich habe gleich darauf die oberen Kartenfächer festgenäht, bevor man dies macht, sollte man aber noch den Klettverschluss anbringen/festnähen. Hat man das getan, kann man die oberen Kartenfächer genau an den Rand legen, festkleben und annähen.Unfortunately I made a mistake an sewed on the top layer of card slots, before sewing on the velcro, so attach the Velcro first. When you have done that, place the card slots right on the edge of the inner layer, tape and sew it.Hier kann man sehen, wo ich den Klettverschluss angebracht habe.Here you can see where I attached the Velcro.

Soweit so gut: Jetzt näht man an einer der langen Seiten Kartenfächer und inneren Schlauch zusammen. So ist nur noch eine Seite unbefestigt. Wie gesagt, am besten benutzt man Stylefix, um alles miteinander zu verbinden, aber Kreppband funktioniert auch.

So far so good: Now sew one of the long sides with card slots and inner tube together. This way one long side is still loose. As I said before, use adhesive tape for sewing, if you got it, it makes things a lot easier, but you can use masking tape instead.
Dann das Innenteil auf das Außenteil legen, mit den linken Seiten aufeinander, also die falschen unschönen Seiten, und näht Innen-und Außenteil an den kurzen Seiten und an der bisher unbenähten Seite zusammen. Dadurch entsteht noch ein großes Fach, wo man z.B. Scheine stecken kann. Anschließend alles begradigen, also zuschneiden und sich riesig freuen.

Und hier das Endprodukt nochmal im Detail:

Now it is time to assemble the whole wallet. Place inner and outer layer on top of each other, left/wrong sides facing each other. Then sew the short ends together and the unsewn long side. This way you get another big pocket, where you can put banknotes. Finally, straighten everything by using a pair of sharp scissors or a cutter and a ruler, if you like it extra straight, and voila,  then it's time to be go crazy happy.

Fertig, und ich überleg mir nochmal, ob ich nicht doch was anderes zum Wichteln finde, denn dieses Teil ist schon nicht schlecht und dazu auch noch grün und vegan.Und was ich aus dem anderen Schlauch machen könnte, also ich bräuchte unbedingt noch einen schönen coolen Gürtel, oder noch eine Tasche? hhhmmm
Da steht das nächste Projekt wohl schon fest.

Yeah. Done, and I will consider if I can't find anything else for secret Santa, because this little beauty is way to pretty to leave my sight and it is actually green and vegan.

And what could I make out of the other tubes, well, I do need a new belt, or maybe another bag? hhmmmm
