Vor Olivers Geburt hab ich viele Geburtsgeschichten gelesen um mich vorzubereiten. Daher wusste ich schon: alles ist möglich, nichts ist planbar!! Ich wollte eine natürliche Geburt, wenn möglich ohne medikamentöse Hilfe und ambulant, also innerhalb von 24h nach Hause gehen. So weit so gut. Wie gesagt war mir klar, dass man eine Geburt nicht planen kann, damit wie es dann im Endeffekt bei uns war habe ich aber in meinen kühnsten Träumen nicht gerechnet.
I read lots of birth stories before Oliver’s due date to prepare myself. So I already knew: everything is possible, nothing is projectable!! I wanted a natural birth, without medical help if possible and ambulant, meaning going home within 24 hours. So far so good. As already mentioned, I knew that you can’t plan a delivery, but I never would have dreamed about how everything turned out in the end.
Die Kurzfassung hab ich ja hier schon mal geschrieben, er kam 15 Tage nach dem errechneten Termin nach 5 Tage Einleitung und Wehen doch per Notkaiserschnitt auf die Welt. Da wir wirklich viel probiert haben möchte ich meine Erfahrung hier aufschreiben, um werdenden Mamis ein paar Möglichkeiten zu zeigen. Ich war zum Beispiel die ganze Zeit sehr unsicher, ob das alles normal ist – von Familie und Bekannten hörte ich tagelang nur: “Na das ist doch nicht normaaal, ich hab noch nie gehört das ein Baby so spät auf die Welt kommt, tuuuut man da nix im Krankenhaus??”. Online hab ich auch wenig Berichte gefunden von Babies die sich so lange Zeit gelassen haben. Hätte mir geholfen. Daher hoffe ich, das mein Bericht in Zukunft auch jemandem helfen wird die Hoffnung nicht aufzugeben und sich nicht als “abnormal” zu fühlen, nur weil die Geburt nicht wie bei den Meisten abläuft.
I’ve written the short version already here: he arrived 15 days after his due date by emergency c-section, after 5 days of medical induction of labor. As we’ve tried a lot I want to write down my experience here, to show expectant moms some different things. During this whole time I was very unsure if the things happening to us are normal. For days I only heard: “That can’t be normal, I’ve never heard of a delivery that took so long, aren’t they doing anything in the hospital??” from family and friends. I could only find few reports of babies being born so long after their due date online. It would have really helped me to know that I’m not alone. So I hope this report will help some expectant moms in the future.

Also, lasst uns am errechneten Geburtstermin starten: am 14.07. war ich ins Krankenhaus zum CTG bestellt, das ist noch routinemäßig hier in Österreich. Das CTG war wie aus dem Bilderbuch, Herztöne vom Baby in Ordnung und auch schon eine Kontraktion zu sehen – ich war guter Dinge, dachte nun wird es bald los gehen, in 1-2 Tagen hab ich dann mein Baby. Ab da ging es alle 3 Tage zum CTG, immer mit dem Gefühl das wird nun das letzte Mal sein. Ergebnis immer das selbe, Herztöne 1A, ich soll einfach Geduld haben. Ein paar Tage später hatte Max dann schon Urlaub, da saßen wir also und wussten nicht so recht was mit uns anzufangen, einfach nur warten ist doof… wir haben dann sogar noch einiges unternommen, man kann ja nicht nur daheim sitzen, immer mit dem Hintergedanken: na wenn wir das jetzt noch machen, da wird er uns reinpfuschen und kommen ;-)
So, let’s start at the expected date of delivery: 14th of July. I was ordered to the hospital for a CTG, which is routinely here in Austria. The CTG was like to see from a picture book, everything ok with the heart rate of the baby and even a contraction – I was in good spirits, thought I’ll have my baby in 1-2 days. From there I had to go to the CTG every three days, always with the feeling that this will be the last time. The result was always the same, heart rate great, I should just be patient. A few days later Maxs’ leave from work started and we sat there and did not really know what to do with ourselves, just waiting … we did some fun stuff anyway those days, you can’t just sit at home and wait. But we always had the motive: well, if we do this now, he’ll want to disrupt us and birth will start. ;-)
Am Tag 9 nach dem EGT bekam ich dann beim CTG einen Wehencocktail – Rizinusöl mit Alkohol, ein Hebammen-Hausmittel. Das wirkt wie ein Einlauf und dadurch, dass der Darm um die Gebärmutter verläuft, können dessen Kontraktionen auch Wehen (also Kontraktionen der Gebärmutter) auslösen. Man mischt das Ganze mit Fruchtsaft, dann schmeckts nicht ganz so eklig, aber lecker ist auch anders ;-) Die abführende Wirkung hat bei mir eingesetzt, allerdings keine Wehen. Daher wurde ich am nächsten Tag, also Tag 10, stationär im Krankenhaus aufgenommen, damit das Baby engmaschiger kontrolliert werden konnte.
On day 9 after the calculated due date I got a “birth cocktail” from the midwives - castor oil with alcohol, a household remedy. This acts like an enema and the fact that the bowel goes around the uterus its contractions can lead to uterus contractions. You mix the whole thing with fruit juice, so it doesn’t take as disgusting as it sounds, but tasty is different;-) The laxative effect worked for me, but I got no contractions. So the next day, day 10, I was hospitalized so that the baby could be controlled more often (by CTG)
Tag 10 nach dem EGT (Do) – SSW 42 / day 10 after due date – weeks 42
Ich wollte eigentlich auf keinen Fall eine Einleitung, wollte aber auch nicht den Ärzten, also den Experten, widersprechen und die Gesundheit meines Babys riskieren. Also ging ich ins Spital und bekam dort dann ein Vaginalzäpfchen, welches Wehen auslösen soll (Prostin). Das wirkt allerdings nur, wenn der Körper und das Baby bereit sind. Was bei uns anscheinend nicht der Fall war, weil es hat einfach nicht gewirkt.
I really wanted to avoid medical induction of labor, but also did not want to overrule the doctors and risk my baby’s health, as they are the experts. So I went to the hospital and got a vaginal suppository to trigger contractions (Prostin). However, this works only when the body and the baby are ready. That wasn’t the case with us as it seems, because it didn’t work.
Tag 11 nach dem EGT (Fr) / day 11 after due date
Auch diesen Tag haben wir ohne Wehen und sonstige Beschwerden im Krankenhaus verbracht. Ich bekam in der Früh das zweite Prostin, am Abend dann das dritte, der Muttermund blieb bombenfest zu und die Wehen aus. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war es eigentlich noch recht nett und wir haben gescherzt und gelacht, waren in der Kantine, haben Gesellschaftsspiele gespielt und versucht, das Beste aus der Zeit zu machen. Die Hebammen waren auch wirklich alle sehr sehr nett und bemüht und haben auch einige alternative Methoden versucht. Ich bekam eine Akupunktur und eine Bauchmassage mit Aromaölen. Leider auch ohne Erfolg.
We spent this day without contractions or other troubles at the hospital. I got another vaginal suppository in the morning, a third one at night, but the cervix stayed closed and I got no contractions. At this point it was still kind of nice, we laughed a lot, played games and tried to make the best of this time. The midwives were really nice and strived to help me with natural methods. I got an acupuncture and a belly massage with aroma oils. Unfortunately also without any effect.
Beim abendlichen CTG (zu diesem Zeitpunkt musste ich ungefähr 4x täglich zum CTG) hat die Hebamme dann den Muttermund manuell auf 1cm gedehnt und die Eihäute etwas gelöst – ja das ist so unangenehm wie es klingt ;-) Aber ich wollte einfach immer noch gerne eine natürliche Geburt, und dachte ein manueller Eingriff ist immer noch besser als ein medikamentöser.
After the CTG at night (I had to go about 4 times daily) the midwife stretched the cervix manually to 1cm and loosened the egg membranes a bit – yes, thats as painful as it sounds ;-) But I still wanted a natural birth, so I thought a manual intervention is better than more medication.
Nach dieser Behandlung setzten dann auch tatsächlich Wehen ein, sogar sehr häufig, ungefähr alle 5 Minuten. Beim nächsten CTG gegen 20 Uhr wurde das dann auch bestätigt, es wurden regelmäßige Wehen aufgezeichnet, juhu!! Die Nacht verbrachte ich dann damit am Gang auf und ab zu gehen, Bewegung soll ja angeblich geburtsfördernd sein (ich wurde allerdings bald von einer Hebamme ins Bett geschickt, die meinte ich brauche meine Kräfte noch, wenn die Geburt wirklich los geht.)
After this treatment I got contractions – quite often, about every 5 minutes. They were confirmed by the next CTG at about eight. I spent the night walking through the hallway, as movement is said to speed up labour (although I was sent to bed during the night by a midwife, she said I’ll need my strength for labour)
Tag 12 nach dem EGT (Sa) / day 12 after due date
Am Samstag wurde dann der Muttermund kontrolliert – immer noch 1cm :-( Ich war echt enttäuscht, die ganze Nacht Wehen und trotzdem nichts. Ich bekam dann noch ein Zäpfchen Prostin (man bekommt immer 4 insgesamt), dann wurde den Rest des Tages mit Behandlungen pausiert um dem Körper ein bisschen Ruhe zu gönnen – und die Wehen leider wieder schwächer, bis sie in der Nacht ganz verschwanden.
On the next day the cervix was controlled – still only 1cm :-( I was really disappointed, a whole night with contractions for nothing. I got another vaginal suppository (you always get 4 total) and the rest of the day was paused with medication to give the body some rest – and the contractions got fewer and disappeared during the next night.
Mittlerweile war ich dann doch etwas fertig mit den Nerven – alle rundherum bekamen ihre Babys, nur ich musste noch warten. Außerdem machten wie gesagt viele Verwandte und Bekannte Stress von außen. Ich fühlte mich ein bisschen wie gefangen in dem Spital, obwohl alle echt sehr nett zu mir waren.
At this point I was already kind of stressed – everyone around had their baby, only I had to wait for so long. Additionally friends and family stressed me from outside the hospital with their constant requests. I felt trapped in the hospital, although everyone was really nice to me.
So, und nachdem das hier schon sehr lange ist, und es doch noch einige Tage weiter ging, werde ich einfach einen Teil 2 dazu machen. (Toll diese Cliffhanger hm, das ist wie mit den Serien im Fernsehen, da wird es spannend und dann gehts ab in die Sommerpause ;-)) Bis dahin, alles Liebe!!
