Ich bin zwar noch immer kein grosser Fan der vietnamesischen Küche, aber ich liebe diese wunderbaren Sandwiches, Banh Mi. Der Boston Globe hat sie mal so beschrieben: „Banh Mi sind knusprig-knackig, süss, sauer, salzig und saftig, alles gleichzeitig! Banh Mi ist eine tolle Verbindung von französischem Baguette und vietnamesischen Aromen.“
Dem kann ich nichts mehr hinzufügen, nur noch das: In Banh Mi habe ich mich in Hoi An verliebt, in diesem wunderschönen vietnamesischen Küstenstädtchen. Dort habe ich sie zum ersten Mal gegessen. Da war diese alte Dame mit ihrem mobilen Essstand, und alle ihre Banh Mis waren einfach umwerfend. Jetzt lebe ich in Thailand, das ist ja nicht so weit von Vietnam entfernt – aber Banh Mis sind nirgendwo zu bekommen. Um sie zu geniessen, muss ich schon nach Vietnam reisen – oder nach Berlin!
Gerade bin ich hier in Berlin Tiergarten, nur eine kurze Fahrradfahrt entfernt von der Rosenthaler Strasse in Berlin Mitte. Dort gibt es diesen kleinen Laden, CoCo Banh Mi – und schon ist man im Bahn Mi – Himmel. Schaut Euch das Foto von der Karte an, und entscheidet, was Ihr zuersat probieren wollt. Mein absoluter Favorit ist das Banh Mi Classic. Ich bestelle es “extra scharf”, da bekommt man einfach noch mehr von der wunderbaren scharfen Sauce.
Also ich könnte jeden Tag dort essen! Ich wünsche Euch, dass Ihr einmal die Gelegenheit habt, dort vorbeizuschauen.

I’m not a big fan of Vietnamese food – yet. But I adore these delicious sandwiches called Banh Mi. The Boston Globe once said: “Banh Mi are crackly-crunchy, sweet, spicy, sour, salty and luscious at the same time. Banh Mi is the great fusion of French baguette and Vietnamese tastes.”
I've nothing to add, but this: I fell in love with Banh Mi when I first found them in Hoi An, a very beautiful little coastal town in Vietnam. In the evenings, an old lady with her mobile food stall had them and they were delicious. I'm living in Thailand now, not far from Vietnam – but Banh Mis are not available. To find them, I'll have to travel to Vietnam – or to Berlin!
Here I am, in Berlin Tiergarten, and it’s only a short bicycle ride to Rosenthaler Strasse in Mitte. There you'll find a little shop, called CoCo Banh Mi Deli, and, to put it simple, you are in Banh Mi Heaven. Look at the picture of the menu I took, and decide what you'd like first. My all time favorite is Banh Mi Classic, and I order it “extra spicy”, which simply means that there’s more of the delicious spicy sauce.
